Short answer: The quality of the air you breathe, the light you receive, the materials you touch and the noise you endure at home have a direct impact on your health. High-end interior design has the responsibility —and the capacity— to design spaces that take care of you.

We spend approximately 90% of our time in indoor spaces. It is a figure that, when you hear it for the first time, is hard to believe. But think about it: home, office, car, restaurants, shops. Most of our life unfolds under a roof.
And yet we rarely ask ourselves how those indoor spaces affect our health. Not our aesthetic taste, not our perceived comfort: our physical and mental health. The answer, according to evidence accumulated over the last two decades, is that the impact is enormous.
The air you breathe at home can be more polluted than the air outside. The artificial light you receive can alter your sleep rhythms. The materials around you can emit chemical compounds for years. The noise coming through the windows can raise your cortisol without you consciously perceiving it.
High-end interior design has the capacity —and, we believe, the obligation— to address all of this. Not as a fashionable wellness add-on, but as a fundamental design principle.
The indoor air of a home can contain concentrations of pollutants between two and five times higher than those outdoors. The sources are multiple and, in many cases, are directly related to design and interior decisions:
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). They are gases emitted by conventional paints, varnishes, adhesives, particleboards, synthetic textiles, cleaning products and artificial air fresheners. Chronic exposure to high levels is associated with headaches, respiratory irritation, fatigue and, in the worst cases, more serious long-term problems.
Formaldehyde. Present in low-quality particleboards and plywoods, in carpentry glues, in some treated textiles. It is a known irritant and classified as a carcinogen. E1 or E0 certified boards emit minimal levels; lower-quality ones do not.
Particles and dust. Carpets, certain fabrics and poorly maintained climate-control systems can be reservoirs of mites, dust and allergens.
What we do about it:
We exclusively select materials with low or zero VOC emissions: mineral or silicate paints, water-based varnishes, E0 or E1 boards, solvent-free adhesives, natural or Oeko-Tex certified textiles. It is not a premium option we offer as an extra: it is our specification standard.
We design natural cross ventilation whenever the architecture allows it, and when it does not, we incorporate mechanical ventilation systems with high-efficiency filters (HEPA or equivalent) that renew the air without the need to open windows in noisy or polluted environments.
The relationship between light and health is perhaps the area where scientific evidence has advanced most over the last decade. We know that exposure to natural light during the day and the reduction of artificial light at night are fundamental to maintaining the circadian rhythm: the biological clock that regulates sleep, mood, metabolism and immune function.
Direct implications for interior design:
Maximise natural light in daytime rooms. It seems obvious, but many conventional layouts sacrifice natural light in the living room or the kitchen to keep bedrooms on the façade. In our projects, natural light is the first variable of the layout, not the last. We prioritise that the spaces where the day is spent —kitchen, living room, study— receive the best light.
Treat natural light intelligently. Not all natural light is the same. Direct south light in summer can overheat a room; grazing east light in the morning can dazzle. Curtains, blinds, adjustable louvres and solar-control glass are lighting design tools as important as the windows themselves.
Design artificial light with circadian criteria. Artificial lighting at home should follow, as far as possible, the natural curve of the day. More intense and neutral in the morning (3000K), warmer and dimmer in the late afternoon and evening (2700K or less). Tunable lighting systems allow this transition automatically, and their impact on sleep quality is documented in multiple studies.
Eliminate blue light at night. Screens emit blue light that suppresses melatonin and interferes with sleep. In bedrooms, we design lighting without a blue component for the last hours of the day, and we suggest device-use habits that complement the design of the space.
Noise is a chronic stress factor that we get used to perceptually but that our body does not recover from. Consistent studies show that prolonged exposure to ambient noise (traffic, construction, neighbours, appliances) raises cortisol, fragments sleep, increases blood pressure and reduces the capacity for concentration.
In a luxury interior design project, acoustics are addressed at three levels:
Insulation from the exterior. High-performance acoustic windows (double or triple glazing with asymmetric chambers), sealing of the joinery, treatment of the shutter boxes (one of the acoustically weakest points in Spanish housing) and, when necessary, acoustic linings on the façade.
Insulation between rooms. Walls and ceilings with sufficient mass or multilayer solutions to prevent the sound of the living room from reaching the bedroom, the neighbour's bathroom from being heard in your kitchen or the climate-control system from generating perceptible noise in the rooms.
Interior acoustic conditioning. Each room has an ideal reverberation time according to its use. A living room that is excessively reverberant (hard surfaces, high ceilings, little textile) produces auditory fatigue and makes conversation difficult. Rugs, curtains, upholstery, textile wall panels and ceilings with absorbent treatment correct interior acoustics without altering the aesthetics.
Ergonomics in residential interior design goes far beyond choosing an office chair with good back support. It affects every physical interaction with the space:
Working heights. The standard kitchen worktop at 85 cm is not comfortable for everyone. In bespoke projects, we adjust the heights of the worktop, washbasin, desk and shelves to the actual stature of the users. The difference between 85 and 92 cm of worktop can mean the elimination of chronic back pain when cooking.
Seat depth. A sofa with a seat too deep for the user's stature forces them to sit on the edge or to arch their back. In high-end design, the depth, the inclination of the backrest and the firmness of the filling are specified according to who will use it. That is why we always test sofas before ordering them.
Underfloor heating as a standard, not as an extra. Walking barefoot on a warm stone or wood floor is not only a matter of comfort: it eliminates the need for slippers, reduces muscle tension in the feet and legs, and allows you to enjoy the touch of the noble materials you have chosen. In our projects, underfloor heating is a firm recommendation across the entire surface of the home, not only in the bathrooms.
Biophilic design starts from a simple and powerful piece of evidence: human beings need contact with nature to be well. And in urban environments, where most of our clients live, that contact depends largely on how the home is designed.
It is not about filling the house with plants —although plants help—. It is about incorporating the principles of nature into the design of the space:
Natural materials instead of synthetics. Wood, stone, linen, wool, ceramic. Visual and tactile contact with these materials has a documented calming effect that artificial materials do not produce, no matter how well they imitate them.
Organic forms. Curves, irregularities, asymmetries. Nature has no right angles or perfectly smooth surfaces. Incorporating organic forms —in the furniture, in the finishes, in the composition— reduces the perceptual rigidity of the space.
Water. An interior fountain, a pond on the terrace or simply the sound of running water have an immediate relaxing effect. It is a resource we use with moderation but with conviction when the space and the client allow it.
Views to the exterior. Although you cannot change what is outside the window, you can design how it is framed. A window treated as a living painting —with the right curtain, without furniture that blocks the view, with a low bench that invites sitting and looking— transforms the relationship between interior and exterior.
Every decision of materials and systems has an environmental consequence that, although it does not directly affect your health today, does affect the environment in which you will live tomorrow. Contemporary high-end interior design has the possibility of choosing better, and that possibility is also a responsibility.
Certified wood, non-toxic paints, insulation that reduces energy consumption for decades, efficient appliances, low-consumption and long-life LED lighting, locally sourced materials that reduce the transport footprint. They are not aesthetic compromises: they are intelligent decisions that improve both the space and the impact that space has on the world.
