Short answer: The home ice bath has moved from trend to permanent installation. And a permanent installation needs treated water, drainage, structural capacity and a quiet chiller.

Five years ago the home ice bath was a plastic tub on a terrace. Today clients ask for a room: cold plunge, sauna, contrast shower and a low-lit rest area. The shift matters, because a permanent installation raises problems a bucket never did.
The useful range is 8 to 12 °C, with one to three minutes of immersion to sternum height. Advanced users go to 4-6 °C. Below that, additional benefit is debatable and cardiovascular demand climbs; in private installations we prefer a conservative range and a visible timer.
A well-insulated 400-500 litre tub is held by a 1 HP chiller; up to 1,000 litres, or outdoors, specify 1.5 HP. What almost nobody anticipates is the noise: a chiller is a compressor with a fan, producing 45-55 dB.
It never goes inside the recovery room. It belongs in a ventilated plant space, on anti-vibration mounts and ducted, at a sensible distance so hydraulic performance is not penalised.
Untreated cold water fouls like any other: sweat, skin cells, creams. The sensible domestic standard is a 20 micron cartridge filter, UV or ozone sterilisation and occasional pH control. On that basis water lasts four to eight weeks before renewal.
And yes: a compulsory shower before entering. It is the single measure that extends water life most.
500 litres is 500 kg of water, plus vessel and user, concentrated over barely a square metre. On a suspended slab, verify with an engineer before buying anything. In a basement or at ground level on a slab, it is rarely a problem.
Drainage is non-negotiable: a floor gully with a 1.5 % fall and a dedicated outlet for emptying the tub. We have seen water changes carried out in buckets purely because nobody planned a 40 mm drain.
What makes a cold plunge work is not the tub, it is the sequence. Sauna or infrared, cold water, rest. All three stations should sit within ten paces of each other, over continuous slip-resistant flooring (R11 minimum), with heated towel rails and a rest area with a comfortable seat and warm light below 100 lux.
That rest area, usually the first thing cut, is where much of the effect happens: it is the moment the body rebalances.
Slip-resistant porcelain or microcement with an anti-slip finish; never untreated timber under the tub. Mechanical ventilation at 6-8 air changes per hour, because thermal contrast produces mist and condensation. Grade 316 stainless ironmongery if the room shares air with a chlorinated area.
A 1 HP chiller draws roughly 0.7-1 kW while running, and in a conditioned room it cycles intermittently: about 2-4 kWh a day with normal use and an insulated cover in place when idle. The cover is, once again, the most profitable measure.
We design the complete recovery room — heat, cold and rest — with its plant space, its acoustics and its wet circulation. We verify loads with the structural engineer before fixing the tub position, and we isolate the chiller so the room stays silent.

A typical cycle is 10-15 minutes of sauna, 1-3 minutes in cold water and 5-10 minutes of dry rest, repeated two or three times. That is why the room is designed with all three stations within ten paces of each other.
