Cold plunge and recovery room design

The home ice bath has moved from trend to permanent installation. A permanent installation needs treated water, drainage, structural capacity and a chiller that does not keep the house awake.

A filled contrast tub weighs between 400 and 700 kg concentrated in barely one square metre. That is the first thing to resolve, long before finishes.

We design the recovery room as a complete circuit: cold, heat, transition shower and rest area, with services sized for daily rather than occasional use.

What a permanent cold tub requires

Point loads

400-700 kg depending on volume. On a standard residential slab this must be verified with the engineer or relocated over a load-bearing wall or ground slab.

Chiller and noise

The refrigeration unit is the noisy element: isolated, ventilated and ideally outside the room in use.

Filtration plus ozone or UV

Without continuous treatment cold water fouls quickly. Permanent filtration and disinfection is what avoids weekly draining.

Drainage and fill point

Dedicated supply and drain at the exact position. Moving a contrast tub after construction is extremely expensive.

Sauna-to-cold contrast

Physical proximity between heat and cold decides whether the protocol is used or abandoned. More than a few steps and it stops happening.

Transition shower

Mandatory between sauna and cold tub, for water hygiene and for safety.

Rest area

Lounger, dimmable warm light and silence. Passive recovery is part of the protocol, not a decorative extra.

Slip resistance and drainage

The whole room is a wet zone: falls to a gully and class 3 flooring.

Room air temperature

22-24 °C. If the room itself is cold, the protocol is abandoned in winter.

Lighting scenes

Bright light for the cold phase, very warm and low light for rest, in the same room from one scene control.

Dedicated ventilation

Shower and sauna vapour share the space with the cold tub. Without dedicated extraction, condensation appears.

Storage at hand

Towels, robes and footwear within reach. Logistical friction is what kills the habit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cold plunge go on any floor?

Not without checking. Filled, it can exceed 600 kg in under 1.5 m², so the permissible slab load must be verified.

How much energy does a cold plunge use?

It depends on tub insulation and target temperature. A well-insulated unit at 4-6 °C draws a moderate continuous load rather than large peaks.

Does the water need frequent changing?

With continuous filtration and ozone or UV disinfection the drain interval lengthens considerably. Without them, expect near-weekly changes.

Can it be installed outdoors?

Yes, and it is often the best acoustic solution. It needs chiller protection and frost provision.

What is the recommended sequence?

Heat, shower, cold, rest. The layout should allow that without walking wet through the house.

How long does the work take?

Five to ten weeks where drainage and power are already available in the intended zone.

Recovery becomes a habit when the space stops getting in the way.
